Yana Bondarenko – Use of Natural Resources and Energy Management Specialist and Energy Manager of Chortkiv City Council

One of the main goals of the TEAD project is to empower women working in the energy sector in Ukraine. That’s why we interviewed women from all over Ukraine and created a series of biographical publications to share the fascinating experiences and successes of female energy ambassadors. We also paid special attention to the barriers that women professionals face when working in a sector that is currently dominated by men.

Yana developed a passion for energy conservation and management from her early days in the field. “I consider this field to be incredibly important and relevant—it has a global impact, not just in Ukraine but worldwide,” she emphasizes.

Following the Russian invasion, Yana was forced to leave her job and her home, which was under threat of shelling. She moved to a new city, where she now works as an energy manager for the Chortkiv City Council.

Yana’s primary responsibility is energy monitoring for institutions funded by the city budget. Her day-to-day tasks include analyzing energy consumption and conducting educational sessions to promote energy-saving practices among facility managers. Additionally, for two years, she served as a lecturer in energy management retraining courses.

“I am deeply inspired when I witness the impact of my work. I love seeing people’s mindsets shift, their attitudes change, and the way they respond to useful information that broadens their horizons and encourages energy-saving behaviors,” Yana says.

Professional Growth and Ongoing Development:

For Yana, continuous development and upskilling are top priorities. She completed a specialized training program on the Covenant of Mayors platform, regularly attends webinars on energy-sector advancements, participates in various projects, and is an active member of the Women’s Energy Club.

Inspiration for Future Energy Managers:

“Develop your skills and strive for excellence. The most important thing is to have a strong desire to learn and to contribute positively to society. This profession is within the reach of any woman, at any age—what matters most is the drive to make a meaningful impact and bring positive change.”
