Results of the survey “Barriers which women specialists face in the energy sector of Ukraine”

The survey was conducted among 35 participants from April 16 to June 30. The target audience is women who have work experience or are currently working in the energy sector of Ukraine. The results of the survey highlight the barriers that hinder women’s professional development and identify strategies to improve gender equality in the industry.

Barriers and difficulties

In the first place among the difficulties faced by women in the energy sector was balancing professional and personal life (60%). The next most important issues include gender biases and stereotypes in the work environment. Also, 40% of participants noted the low representation of women in the industry, which creates pressure and a lack of role models.

Another important barrier is the pay gap between men and women. Alarmingly, 8.6% of those surveyed have experienced sexual harassment or discrimination at work.

Given these challenges, the Ukrainian energy sector needs to implement inclusive practices and regular training for teams on social and gender issues. Other important measures include ensuring equal pay and developing policies to help employees balance professional and family responsibilities.

Strategic support

According to the survey participants, the most effective strategy for supporting women’s leadership is educational activities (85.7%), including different types of training. It is also important to implement leadership development programs for women (62%) and flexible working hours. Professional mentoring and the creation of gender-sensitive policies at enterprises received the same support. Inclusive practices in recruitment processes are supported by 14% of participants.

Benefits of Gender Diversity

The majority of respondents are well aware of the benefits of gender diversity in the energy sector. They believe it promotes social and economic growth, sustainable development, an innovative approach to problems, and better engagement with local communities.

Representation & Participation

The survey showed that the majority of respondents are aware of the importance of gender equality in the STEM industry. According to 2020 data, women make up only 28% of employees in STEM (Erasmus University Rotterdam). However, 20% of those surveyed are unsure about the need for change, highlighting the need to raise awareness of the importance of inclusion.

Energy & Health

The greatest impact of energy on human health, according to the participants, is the impact on psychological and social well-being, as well as on the risk of developing diseases.

Healthy Reconstruction

More than 88% of respondents believe that the improvement of social policy during the reconstruction of Ukraine should be aimed at investing in the public sector and energy efficiency. 62% support the implementation of low energy standards, and 34.3% noted the importance of recognizing the right to housing and energy well-being as a constitutional right.

Economic Benefits of Gender Equality

Bridging the gender gap in STEM and promoting women’s leadership in the energy sector has a significant positive impact on economic growth and job creation. The integration of women allows for better use of intellectual potential, promotes innovative ideas, increases productivity and reduces corruption.

Corporate Policy Recommendations

To promote gender equality, it is important to implement flexible working arrangements, equal pay, management support, and gender sensitivity training programs. Corporate culture should be open and inclusive, with the active involvement of women in the decision-making process.

Gender Aspects of Reconstruction

Mainstreaming gender equality in urban reconstruction promotes social justice, equal opportunity, and economic development. This ensures that the needs of different populations are met, creates a healthy society, and increases competition.

The Benefits of Diversity in Leadership Positions

Gender diversity in leadership positions promotes equality, financial independence, reduced domestic violence, improves the work environment, and improves innovation. This boosts companies’ reputations, attracts talent, and promotes better risk management and decision-making.

The findings of the survey highlight the need to implement measures that promote gender equality in Ukraine’s energy sector.
